about

ABOUT THIS TRACK:
Following-up Collin's playful single "Shark Baby" (Dec 2016), "Baby, You're An Asteroid" is a slightly more serious take on the state of mind of the expectant father.

From the author:

"I definitely think of this song as the B-Side to 'Shark Baby'. When I wrote 'Shark Baby', I was basically just trying to come up with something that would make my wife laugh-- because we were both starting to really feel the gravity of everything. However, with 'Asteroid', I wanted to delve a little deeper and really try to articulate what I was feeling as a first-time dad and hopefully touch on what a lot of first time dad's feel.

I had been sketching and workshopping the idea for months, but was having a hard time getting all the ideas to gel. The final version came together in my hotel room, while I was on the road as an engineer for the Richmond Folk Festival.

Over the next few months, I recorded about three completely different versions of the song. The words and the basic structure of the song stayed the same, but totally different arrangements, different keys, instrumentation, etc. At a certain point, I felt sort of down the rabbit hole, so I sent the three versions to three different musician friends-- whose opinions I really trusted. Each of the three friends picked a different version that they felt was "the one". So, the fourth and final version became a melting pot, with elements from the previous three versions.

Like "Shark Baby", this song was very much a DIY effort: the whole thing was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home studio in Washington, DC. These were the first two songs I recorded in the new space and it was a bit of an experiment to see what it was capable of producing.

It's also the product of a new way that I'm trying to work, which is basically to get the tunes out into the world as fast as possible, so I can move onto the next one."

Verse
Well I don’t know if you can hear me
But they tell me that you can
And what they tell me about you
Is pretty much all I get

They tell me facts and figures
That I don’t understand
And show me pictures
That don’t show much yet

Chorus
But They tell me that you’re healthy
And they tell me that you’re fine
And they told me that you’re gonna be a boy
And they say you’re ‘bout the size of a clementine
But baby you’re an asteroid.

Verse
And they tell me all the things
That she should and shouldn’t eat
And all the things
I should and shouldn’t say

And they tell me all the things
They didn’t know about when they had me
And every terrifying thing
They find out today

Chorus
But they tell me that you’re healthy
And they tell me that you’re fine
And they told me that you’re gonna be a boy
And they say you’re ‘bout the size of a clementine
But baby you’re an asteroid.

Bridge
I’ve been thinking about my folks
When my mom had my sister
She was twenty-two

Sometimes it all feels like a hoax
Like a big inside joke
Like the war of the worlds
Or the landing on the moon

Verse
They say that when you come
The world will never be the same
And I’ll never sleep or eat
Or talk the same again

And the people in the mirror
Will be pictures in a frame
And we’ll laugh out loud
At the thought that we were them

Chorus
But They tell me that you’re healthy
And they tell me that you’re fine
And they told me that you’re gonna be a boy
And they say you’re ‘bout the size of a clementine
But baby you’re an asteroid.
